Part of the fifth generation of popular F-Series the 1972 F-250 Ranger XLT 4 x 4 featured a 131 inch wheelbase, an 8 foot bed and the deluxe Ranger XLT trim package. As delivered from the factory the Ford F-250s with 4 x 4 running gear rode well above the two-wheel drive F-250, thus earning them the “Highboy” nickname. These trucks were equipped with the New Process NP435- four speed manual transmission and a transfer case separate from the transmission, which required the truck to ride higher than the two wheel drive counterpart hence the “Highboy” nickname.
