Tom ” Mongoose” McEwen (Jan. 14, 1937 -June 10, 2018) was one of drag racings most popular competitors. His racing career spanned 45 years. His rivalry with Don “Snake” Prudhomme was legendary throughout the early 1970’s. Their weekly matchups brought the spotlight in the sport and the sponsorship with Hot Wheels enabled them to really raise their game. McEwen did most of his racing on the West Coast tracks settling a new low at the time of 6.39 seconds at the famous Lion’s Drag Strip. He also won the AHRA Worlds Finals at Spokane Raceway Park in 1982, the prestigious Big Bud Shootout in 1984, and Top Fuel at the 1991 Summernationals at Englishtown, NJ. He retired from racing in 1992, and later worked as motorsports director for Drag Racer magazine. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2001.
